What a great presentReview date: 2010-07-06 Rating: 10 out of 10This was what our 2 year old grandson enjoyed most of all his birthday presents. Just like any little boy he loves transport and having a basic set to build on was ideal. No doubt it will be added to at Christmas and beyond. When I used to teach 4-5 year olds, a parent donated an already well used Brio train set. It was a favourite toy with all the children and it stood up to many further years of play by many boys and girls. The magnetic engine and trucks also add to the fun - and educational quality of this set.

ReviewsPerfect Foundation!Review date: 2010-05-26 Rating: 10 out of 10Brio train sets and extra components will last generations. They also hold a good resale value. This first set is ideal to gage interest. If desired this will form a sound foundation to expand upon over time. There is a wonderful variety of extra track, supports, switches, bridges, sheds, turntables and rolling stock available.
This particular set includes:-
1 X small wooden engine NOT battery operated. There is another first Brio set that is battery operated if preferred.
3 X solid wooden carriages with fruit logos on the sides.
8 X long curved pieces of wooden track, wheel grooves carved both sides for maximum track variation.
Two plastic end sections, one Red and one Green for easy track to floor transition.
A fabric tunnel, foam filled with quality vivid printed detail all over.
All the wood is completely smooth so no splinters. The track is untreated so no cracked varnish for the future. Some makes of track will interlock very well with Brio but it's best to take some Brio with you to try before you buy, a lot don't. Each piece is double sided with wheel grooves both sides. This gives the opportunity for a complete circular layout, curvy line and many possibilities in between. The pieces interlock with ease for small inexperienced hands and there is quickly gained satisfaction for effort.
The rolling stock paint finish is superb. All magnets are extremely securely attached. There is a strong magnetic force, enough to keep the train together along the track and over a bridge we added. There is one magnet to the rear of the engine and each end of the carriages. Magnet coupled train sets are a fantastic introduction to the magnetic poles too.
We chose this none battery operated version because imagination can flourish. There is an immense sense of empowerment when 'self body power' causes a train to move with a line of rolling stock behind. The 'little engine driver' has complete constant control with speed. Instant control stopping and starting also which direction when splitter track is added. As the play is purely manual, fine motor skills with hand and eye coordination are improved. No frustration when the battery wears out. No expensive batteries to regularly purchase or inconvenience safely disposing of. A battery powered engine could be added in the future, as one would be fully compatible with this rolling stock.
My daughter had this set for her first Christmas and is now three. It has been added to and kept jumbled together in a sturdy box, when not played hard with. Enjoyed both inside and out, looking at all components there is hardly any play wear. I feel Brio is better made compared to other systems I have looked at. I've seen vintage, extremely play worn sets and they just look beautifully aged, bearing evidence of many happy memories.
I really do hope this was helpful. A first train set is very special indeed.DisappointedReview date: 2008-11-15 Rating: 6 out of 10My 2 year old grandson loves this but gets very frustrated by the little engine which doesn't have enough power to get itself over the bridge without a push. On the level, it can just about pull the three trucks along, if it has a fresh battery.
It's a pity because I'd like to expand the system but, if the trains can't get round unaided, there's little point.Great first train setReview date: 2008-03-10 Rating: 10 out of 10Although most Brio is not recommended for children younger than 3 years old, this set is designated as being OK from 18 months old up. We bought it for our son's second birthday, and he absolutely adores it. The pieces all seem very robust, and there is relatively limited scope for him to do much damage with the pieces if he throws a tantrum. For instance the house is made of a soft material. Learning how to run the train on and off the tracks, keep it on the track, run it through the house and use the right magnet on each carriage to connect to the others has proved to be an absorbing exercise in physical and mental dexterity. Apart from the elegant simplicity of the tracks itself, all the pieces are brightly coloured with familiar fruits on the side of the carriages.
Of course, the real beauty of this system is that you can carry on adding track, rolling stock and accessories as the child gets older. Talking of the track, despite it seeming to be a relatively straightforward piece of construction, we have found that other makes of Brio-like track are of noticeably poorer manufacture and in some cases (such as that from Ikea) do not interconnect well. You may well pay more for the Brio brand name, but judging by the quality of this set, it is probably worth the extra.
